The Burger with Pepperoni Pizzas for Buns

It’s the choice that we all have to face, sooner or later. Do you want to eat a burger, or do you want to eat a personal-sized pepperoni pizza? What if I told you that you didn’t have to subject yourself to this particular brand of fat-kid Sophie’s choice, ever again? What if I told you that, finally, you can have it all?

Behold, the burger that doesn’t force you to choose: A perfect griddled cheeseburger, with entire mini pepperoni pizzas for buns. We use a regular kaiser roll, split and spread with pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, and miniature pepperoni, toast it under the broiler until the cheese melts, then dress the burger simply with shredded lettuce, a slice of tomato, and some raw white onion.

Ingredients
  • 1 crusty Kaiser roll, split
  • 4 tbsp pizza sauce
  • 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1/4 cup mini sliced pepperoni
  • 6 oz 80/20 ground beef
  • 1 slice tomato
  • 1 slice white onion
  • 1/4 cup iceberg lettuce, shredded
Instructions
  1. First, prep the pizza buns. Preheat broiler. Slice a Kaiser roll in half, and spread each side with 2 tbsp pizza sauce. Top with shredded mozzarella and miniature pepperoni, and set aside.

  2. In a skillet over medium high heat, cook burger to desired doneness, flipping as needed. Add any leftover cheese to the burger patty right at the end, because to hell with it. Remove from heat and set aside to rest while you cook your pizza buns.

  3. Broil pizza buns on a baking sheet until cheese melts, checking often, about 2 minutes. To assemble, place bottom pizza bun cheese side up, then cooked burger, then lettuce, tomato, and onion. Crown that magnificent beast with the top half of the pizza bun, and serve immediately.

  1. My Mom used to make little pizza buns like that to serve as snacks when family came to visit and my Dad loved them. However, Dad’s favourite thing to eat was a hamburger. If he were still with us, he would be chomping at the bit go and try your pizza burger.

    1. My favorite thing about this is what a frozen French bread pizza vibe these buns have. And they don’t end up overwhelming the burger at all. I’ll bet he’d love ’em. 😉

  2. I laughed with delight when I saw this sandwich. It reminded me of a pizza I had in Venice that had french fries on top – two of my favourite foods together in one bite – Yay! I can’t wait to try this sandwich at home.
